English with an Accent

language, ideology and discrimination in the united states

Best laid plans and a free book

I have been absent for a while but here I am again to say that the revised second edition of English with an Accent is now on sale.

Textbooks are outrageously expensive. I wish there was something I could do about it, but as there is not, I’m giving away a copy of the softcover edition, which costs something like $45. If you leave a comment here in about a month’s time I’ll draw a name at random and send you the book. I’m leaving this open for a whole month because things are rather quiet here and I need to drum up some traffic.

I hope I win. I am a beginning English major. I don’t know that I will take any linguistics classes but I would like to read it anyway.

My inner anthropoligist would LOVE to read this! hehe..and my ”outer self” has a very strong Scottish accent, and living in Australia means my accent makes me stick out a bit and I do get a lot of comments! Thank you Rosina, for your ongoing generosity, and best of luck to everyone :)

I agree. A signed copy would definitely be most appropriate.

your students are very fortunate people. when i hear about really talented writers, like stephen king and yourself, who taught or are teaching, i can’t help being a little (or alot) put-out. i would’ve been your favorite student and brought you flowers and candy periodically. Anyway, thank you for offering one of your books to a very lucky person! i only discovered you late last year, when my sister checked your 4th book in the series. our library is small and only has the one book in the series. although i can access the sacramento library and its smaller satellites, i don’t get a large selection. And the library’s the only place i can afford shop.

thank you for offering the book, but even more so, thank you for giving so much pleasure to your readers. doesn’t matter what’s gone in my day, when i crawl into bed with one of your books, everythings alright.

Hi Rosina, didn’t even know you had this website. Good luck with the new edition …. sounds like it is as relevant as ever. Am coming across all sorts of different ways that English is used here in the heartland of Northern Canada.

Have used this book and its essays in numerous classes to help students think through the ways that linguistic norms shape our daily realities. Would love a copy of the newest release–I always have to buy my own “desk” copy from Routledge!

Would love a copy of this book.

(Notice how I persevered in not making a smileycon OR using an exclamation point. It was harder than it looks.)

I can’t believe audible gives you free memberships to give people. That makes you an awful important person in my book. I would be ecstatic with either the book or membership, so I’m planning to winning. Wish me luck

I guess the competition is still open, so I’d love to try my luck. I’m a big fan of the first edition, and I’d love to check what new material is available in the second edition.

    All the best,

    Claudia
